“Building a sound wealth strategy goes beyond just scratching the surface. It’s getting to the heart of what matters through the deep conversations that people want, but seldom get to have.”

While I officially have 30+ years’ experience advising clients and their families, I began honing my craft closer to age 16 when my interests in business and finance first surfaced. Growing up in northern BC, I got my first lessons as part of our family business. That curiosity later became a calling.

My career began at BMO Nesbitt Burns in 1993, later joining Gordon Private Client Corporation. In June of 1999, I co-founded McLean & Partners Wealth Management (M&P) on a simple but bold premise: deliver truly unbiased and independent investment solutions backed by rigorous, quality in-house research.

In April 2013, our team formed a strategic partnership with Canadian Western Bank (CWB), which took a majority interest in the firm. The move allowed us to expand while maintaining our boutique roots. As President & CEO of the newly named CWB Wealth Partners, I contributed to the growth and leadership of the bank’s Wealth arm overall, while still growing the CIRO boutique of our business. When National Bank acquired CWB in 2025, our team embarked on a new journey by returning to our boutique roots, now under National Bank Financial. Following our transition to National Bank Financial and the evolution of our partnership structure, we introduced the 801 Wealth name to reflect the enhanced scale, capabilities, and direction of our team.

Today, our purpose is clear: “Stewarding futures with clarity, care, and conviction.”

Having built this firm with my partners over the years and being involved with the selling of M&P business into CWB and then the ensuing transition to National Bank, I am able to draw on this experience to connect with and guide current and retired business owners, family offices, foundations, and small institutions. My expertise has supported clients through multi-generational wealth transfers and changing market cycles, where adaptability and education are key due to the evolving nature of family dynamics. My goal is to simplify the complexities of financial markets, so clients understand not only where their money is, but why it’s positioned that way for a better future.

I attended the University of Calgary and Simon Fraser University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. I also hold the Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation, along with my options trading licence.

    Beyond the Office

Active by nature, I enjoy golf, downhill skiing, personal fitness, yoga, and travelling with my family. I’ve been involved with Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta, YEO, and The Strategic Coach program. I’m currently part of the MacKay CEO Forums, a professional peer group that brings together results-oriented leaders, executives, and business owners who share a passion for growth and impact.

“We all define our legacy differently. I see my new role in helping make a significant impact in the charitable world.”

My career in wealth management began in the early 90’s, gaining experience with Burns Fry and eventually Nesbitt Burns. But the real excitement came in 1999 when I was part of the team which founded McLean & Partners, a Calgary-based boutique investment firm. Over the years, we’ve flourished by adopting a client-centric approach rooted in independent research. This time-tested formula has been carried forward at 801 Wealth under National Bank Financial Wealth Management.

After over 30 years of advising clients on the investment side, I have shifted gears to lead a new service for our clients with a focus on philanthropy. By combining my designation – Master Financial Advisor in Philanthropy (MFA-P) with my own family planned giving, I now enjoy a renewed career in educating and counselling others so they can formulate a meaningful and impactful giving strategy of their own.

    Beyond the Office

I enjoy being active in life, where traveling, skiing, cycling, and golf keep me moving, and my watercolours fuel my creative side. My wife Karen and I love spending time together sharing our many common interests, with our two adult children being the most important ones.

“My purpose is to make people better investors. Those who are advised are more likely to realize higher lifetime returns and achieve their financial goals.1

My wealth advisory practice is based around financial planning and investor behavior: two key factors that clients can control with the help of their advisor. This contrasts with the unpredictable, uncontrollable, and largely inconsequential short-term gyrations of financial markets. Empowering clients with this understanding lets me add true value, and put their lifelong goals within reach while easing the stress of market volatility.

Prior to joining 801 Wealth, I enjoyed a long career in Institutional Equity Sales & Trading as Director of Institutional Sales with both GMP Securities and FirstEnergy Capital. My time with FirstEnergy included over three years in the London office, dealing with UK and Europe-based clients. I’ve also worked as an Equity Research Analyst and a Portfolio Analyst with an independent investment manager in Montreal.

I received my MBA (Finance) from McGill University and hold a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics from Mount Allison University. I am a CFA® charterholder and a member of the Calgary CFA® Society.

    Beyond the Office

I rest and recharge by travelling with my wife and two daughters, and stay active through golf, skiing, sporting clays and recreational hockey. I’m also a proud supporter of Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre.

“Strive to get things right the first time, every time.”

Having immigrated here from Ukraine at a young age, I still sometimes find myself awed by the countless pathways to success that Canada offers. My story is the perfect example of that:

Over 10 years ago, I lucked into an internship with the product development team of a major Canadian mutual fund provider. I remember feeling like I’d snuck into Santa’s workshop, suddenly sitting amongst people tasked with scanning the landscape of real-life Canadians coast-to-coast, understanding their truest financial worries, and creating investment solutions to address them.

Though it would take me years to return to private wealth management, that experience of helping investors forge their path towards financial success stuck with me.

In the meantime, I completed my Business studies at Queen’s University and began working in corporate finance for a major oil and gas producers while attaining my Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation.

Eventually, however, the feeling I’d had years ago watching families flourish under sound financial advice called to me and I knew where I belonged.

Now, having returned to private wealth management in 2017, I’m fortunate to love a career where my job is to craft a unique path to financial success for each of the families I work with. I aim to balance proactive investment management with candid, real conversations about the true purpose of family wealth – giving families peace of mind that their wealth is in good hands.

Having found my calling, I look forward to helping my clients achieve their own dreams too.

    Beyond the Office

Forever wondering “oh, how hard can it be?”, you can usually find me tackling a rotating cast of new, niche hobbies in my down time (sometimes, even successfully!). I am also always happy to talk a willing listener’s ear off about the Children’s Cottage Society, an incredible non-profit organization which I am fortunate to support as board member and Investment Committee Chair.

“I strive to provide clarity in a world of financial noise, offering clear, personalized guidance, that helps clients move forward with confidence on their wealth journey.”

My journey into wealth management began shortly after completing my first degree, when I was introduced to the stock market and became fascinated by its dynamic, ever-evolving nature. I quickly realized that wealth management wasn’t just about numbers – it was about helping people. The idea that thoughtful, strategic, wealth management could empower clients to achieve their financial goals and live the life they envision was both exciting and deeply fulfilling. That sense of purpose continues to drive me today.

Drawing on more than 20 years of wealth management experience, I counsel diverse individuals, corporations, and family offices across a broad spectrum of complex investment needs and solutions. This has included, but is not limited to, tailoring strategies to meet retirement objectives, creating investment portfolios to generate return for idle cash within businesses or corporations, and helping families save for life events such as purchasing a home, saving for education, or estate planning.

No client is the same, and their needs evolve over time. So, I work closely with them to provide a personalized strategy that’s tailored to their unique needs through every stage of wealth accumulation, preservation, and withdrawal. My holistic approach integrates tax-efficient strategies and diversified investment solutions to optimize returns while mitigating risk.

Experience has taught me that people with well-designed, risk-managed plans usually fare much better than those without them. Guided by the proverb “knowledge is power,” I ensure my clients understand and feel comfortable with their portfolio’s direction, giving them the confidence they need to feel engaged and assured. By fostering transparent, long-term and trust-based relationships, coupled with individually curated financial plans, my clients and I can both sleep well at night.

    Beyond the Office

Active by nature, I enjoy playing golf, tennis and striving to beat my personal best when riding my Peloton bike. A longstanding love of travel often has me discovering new cultures and destinations, particularly during those cold Calgary winters.

I am also passionate about improving the economic, political, social and employment conditions of working women in Canada. To help further their progress, I am a member of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women Organization.

“It’s an honour to help empower and enrich the lives of the client families I serve. From securing their futures to leaving a legacy, I’m here to guide them every step of the way.”

More than a decade ago, a summer internship at a boutique wealth management firm in Toronto initiated my journey into finance. After graduating university, an opportunity to work with their financial planning team in Calgary had me packing my bags to head West. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of assisting hundreds of families with goals-based financial planning, strategic tax planning, and portfolio management.

Known for my calm, approachable manner and ability to work closely and inclusively with my clients, I am passionate about helping others achieve true financial wellness and peace of mind. Taking a holistic view of my clients’ financial situations, I draw from my tax and financial planning experience to design proactive wealth strategies that are tailored to their needs today, and for future generations.

I hold an MBA from the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, and obtained a BBA from Trent University. I am a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) charterholder, and a Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) professional.

    Beyond the Office

“Just as elite athletes rely on coaches to reach their full potential, I believe people benefit from having a thoughtful financial partner, who helps guide their decisions that support their values and vision.”

My journey into finance began with a natural curiosity at an early age. That curiosity led me to a career in investment banking, where I spent over two decades advising some of the world’s top companies. I thrived on the discipline, the pursuit of excellence, and the challenge of solving complex problems under pressure.

Over time, my focus evolved. Managing my own finances led me to discover a passion for family wealth planning. I realized I wanted to help people — not just businesses — achieve lasting financial independence.

Today, I help clients make confident decisions amid the uncertainty of markets and life. My approach is both analytical and human. With a background in actuarial mathematics and investment banking, I seek to uncover value in opportunities, implement tax-efficient strategies, and help clients chart a course towards financial success. Just as important are the honest conversations about how they want their wealth to support their fullest life — and feel inspired by their financial journey.

I care deeply about the people I partner with, offering the warmth and personal attention they deserve. Helping them make smart financial decisions is a profound privilege and one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work. Client feedback like this reminds me why I do what I do:

“You consistently look out for others’ best interests — it’s obvious you genuinely care and that your advice is grounded in integrity.”

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Mathematics, a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance — both with distinction. I’m also a CFA® Charterholder.

    Beyond the Office

As a proud second generation Calgarian, I’m guided by family, culture, and respect — principles that continue to shape my personal and professional life. My wife and I have been married for over two decades. We’ve spent much of that time cheering from the sidelines of hockey rinks and soccer fields with our four children — who keep life joyful and humbling.

Giving back has always been important to me. As a long-standing supporter of charitable organizations like the United Way of Calgary, I’m committed to strengthening our community — a cornerstone of our family’s values.

“Your partner on the path to financial freedom.”

A born and raised Calgarian, after a stint in the oil and gas industry, a door opened at 801 Wealth and I found my calling in wealth management. From day one, I had an unwavering belief in our team and our unique offering in the competitive landscape: an in-house research team powering a simple, client-centric business approach that lets advisors focus on delivering first-class service.

I help individuals and families grow, protect, and transfer their wealth through tailored strategies across all life stages, from building foundations and accumulating assets to retirement planning and empowering the next generation. I pride myself on going the extra mile for clients, anticipating needs before they arise, staying exceptionally organized, and ensuring timely follow-through on every detail.

Approachable and down-to-earth, I’m passionate about educating clients and simplifying complex topics so they feel confident and informed at every step. I hold the Chartered Investment Manager® (CIM®) designation.

    Beyond the Office
Outside the office I enjoy staying active by playing hockey and golf, snowboarding, and going to the gym. I also love to travel and am a huge Calgary Flames fan.

  • Gary Leung

    Gary Leung

    CFP. PFP, TEP

    Senior Advisor, Financial Planning

“It’s the small, consistent actions that drive the biggest successes. Going that extra mile today paves the way for a better tomorrow.”

My passion for finance started young. I was raised by my grandmother, who didn’t speak English, and as a child, I often found myself translating for her at the bank. In helping her understand the options put forth to her, I found myself not only acting as a translator but as her financial interpreter—decoding “bank speak”. This sparked my love for numbers, problem-solving, and helping others navigate what can often feel like an overwhelming system. That early experience nurtured my desire to make a difference in people’s financial lives.

While my interest in finance has continued to grow, what I truly love most is helping people. For me, financial planning isn’t just about crunching numbers—it’s about understanding each client’s unique story: their dreams, hopes, and goals for the future. Today, I’ve found my purpose in supporting a team of Private Wealth Advisors with preparing, presenting and implementing comprehensive, customized and well-integrated plans for our clients. This includes trust and estate planning and administration, tax planning, philanthropic planning, business succession, and risk management techniques.

Whether it’s a 5-year action plan or 30-year projection, we take the time to analyze our clients’ current financial scenario, then review and implement strategies that can help them achieve their goals. Understanding our clients’ true values helps me support not just their financial needs, but their emotional well-being too.

I began my career in 2014 at BMO as a Financial Services Manager and was promoted to a Financial Planner for high-net-worth clients. In 2023, I joined the firm as a Senior Planner. My professional designations include CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®), Personal Financial Planner® (PFP®), and Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP).

    Beyond the Office

I enjoy being outdoors—whether it’s camping in the mountains with friends or out on a trail hiking or biking. I also love travelling and seeking new adventures, and at home, life is kept lively by my two young kids (ages 4 and 1). I proudly cheer for the Flames and Raptors whenever I can.

  • Avery Loro

    Avery Loro

    Wealth Associate

I always focus on building trusted relationships, by finding the right rhythm with every client.

My path to working in finance was a bit atypical. I started out in the arts, training as a competitive dancer and studying at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City. Living there shaped the way I work, think, and pronounce “coffee”.

My budding dance career was cut short when Covid abruptly changed the world. But I found new purpose in shifting my studies to Finance at Western University, where the world of numbers seemed to parallel the discipline of dance. I’ve always been drawn to organization, planning and helping people feel confident about their financial future, so this change let me tap into those interests.

After graduating, I found my way into private wealth, focusing on performance and presence in a different way. Being an associate lets me manage the day-to-day details of client portfolios, coordinate with advisors and design practical solutions that help financial plans work effortlessly.

I like when things make sense – when the numbers, goals and bigger picture all align. But what matters most to me is building genuine relationships. I want clients to feel understood, not managed, and to know that there’s someone behind the scenes who truly cares about getting the details right and keeps things moving seamlessly. Every client has a different story, and I like using both structure and creativity to design solutions that fit their lives – not just their balance sheets.

    Beyond the Office:

I love spending time on the golf course, DJing, and travelling.

Today, I lead the development and execution of our marketing and content strategies while supporting key business development initiatives. I take great pride in the high level of service our team provides —built on collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to our clients’ success.

I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary.
